The all-Theodorakis concert, which will be attended by the composer, features music drawn from his most popular score, the Zorba ballet, as well as orchestral and vocal music showcasing the composer's blend of traditional Greek music with the grand tradition of Western symphonic music and opera. The idea for the New York concert came from Mr. Dutoit, who was deeply moved by the audience reaction to a concert of Theodorakis's music that was given last year in Montreal. That concert, along with his own growing fascination with Mr. Theodorakis's unique musical language and its expressive power, convinced Mr. Dutoit that a concert in New York during the composer's 75th birthday year was a necessary tribute to a composer whose concert music is only now beginning to be heard in America. The concert will begin with the rousing "Song of Praise" from the composer's Canto Olympico, a celebration of the Olympic spirit commissioned by the 1992 Barcelona Olympic Committee. Soprano Alessandra Marc will then sing the "Great Aria" from the opera Medea and baritone Petr Migounov and tenor Howard Haskin will join Ms. Marc for two scenes from the opera Antigone. Both operas exemplify Mr. Theodorakis's determination over the past decade to turn his fully developed compositional skills to musical portrayals of the great tragedies from Greek antiquity, a desire with musical as well as deeply philosophical roots. The first half of the concert will also feature the composer's haunting Adagio, with the orchestra's principal flute player, Tim Hutchins, and trumpet player, Paul Merkelo, as soloists. The second half of the concert will be devoted exclusively to excerpts from the Zorba ballet performed by mezzo-soprano Mary-Ellen Nesi and bouzouki players Costas Papadopoulos and Christos Christodoulou. The composer calls Zorba perhaps his most representative work, with a grand orchestration including traditional Greek bouzouki (lutes), vocal soloists and chorus. The ballet is a feast of unforgettable melodies and sweeping rhythms that immortalize the indomitable spirit of the Zorba character --a cultural touchstone since Anthony Quinn's portrayal of him in Michael Cacoyannis's 1964 film. The all-Theodorakis concert is being presented by The North American Foundation For Modern Greek Arts, an organization dedicated to promoting contemporary Greek arts in the US and Canada. The organization's founder, Costas Spiliadis, has been a champion of the Theodorakis cause for more than three decades, believing wholeheartedly in the importance of his music as well as the humanitarian impulses that have guided the composer's extensive political activism and made him a hero in his homeland and throughout Europe. Underwriters include Intracom S.A., The Kokkalis Foundation and the North American Foundation For Modern Greek Arts. TICKET INFORMATION Tickets are $40, $25 and $15 and are available through the Avery Fisher Box office or through or Centercharge at: (212) 721-6500. Tickets are also available on the web at: www.lincolncenter.org ABOUT THE COMPOSER Mr. Theodorakis discovered classical music in his youth, and his passion for the music of the great composers brought him to the Athens Conservatory and later to Paris to study with Olivier Messiaen. A long series of political tragedies in his home country - including Nazi occupation, civil war and a 1967 coup that put military dictators in control of the government - pulled Mr. Theodorakis into a vortex of resistance and activism that led to his repeated arrest and brutal torture. A group of human rights activists including Dmitri Shostakovich, Leonard Bernstein, Pierre Boulez and Arthur Miller lobbied for his release, and in 1970 he was exiled to Paris. While in France, he continued his fight against the Greek dictatorship, and when the junta fell from power in 1974 Mr. Theodorakis returned to his homeland a hero, beginning a decade-long career as a Minister of Parliament. This year, in recognition of the work his Greek-Turkish Friendship foundation has done in reducing tensions between these historic adversaries, Mr. Theodorakis has been nominated for the Nobel Prize for Peace. All the while, Mr. Theodorakis continued his career as a composer, producing more than 1,000 songs and song-cycles that have become part of the heritage of Greek music. He has also composed thirty film scores including Serpico and the political drama Z. With his concert works -ballets, symphonies, operas and choral music-Mr. Theodorakis has sought to unite his love of the Western European classical tradition with his roots in Greek music. "My problem as a Greek composer consists in the fact that I do not have any precedents. I have to create from nothingness. I therefore consider this work a search, an experiment, with the aim of pursuing the lost unity." A number of Mr. Theodorakis's works have been recorded on the Intuition label, which is distributed in the United States by Allegro Imports. This October, they will add the Electra opera to this distinguished discography. Mr. Dutoit will record the Zorba excerpts for future release on the Decca label, which is distributed worldwide by Universal Music.
